Last week, Munising played host to an exhilarating frosty spectacle as Michigan Ice Fest 2024 unfolded, showcasing the unwavering resilience of ice climbers and the unbreakable spirit of our tight-knit community. In its 34th iteration, this annual celebration brought over a thousand climbers and enthusiasts from every corner of the nation to Munising, transforming our town into a vibrant hub of ice-clad excitement.

As the eagerly awaited Michigan Ice Fest approaches, avid climbers Matt and Brad Sweda share insights into the current conditions and strategies to navigate the bustling event. The father-son duo, hailing from the Detroit area, have been regular attendees for the past three years, gradually honing their skills and accumulating the necessary gear for a safe climbing experience.

However, as temperatures fluctuate this season, the impact of warm weather on ice fishing is becoming increasingly apparent.

With the upcoming Michigan Ice Fest on the horizon, safety considerations extend beyond the climbers themselves to include spectators and hikers eager to witness the icy spectacle. While the allure of capturing the climbing action on film is undeniable, it’s crucial to be well-prepared for the journey to the ice formations.

President/ CEO, Dennis VanLandschoot shares, “we are thrilled to announce Sydney Curtis, a 5th generation VanLandschoot and granddaughter of Paul VanLandschoot, will join VSI this summer as the new Vice President of Land Operations! Sydney has been an integral part of VSI the past 8 years, working at the dock and market every summer. Her dedication to the families legacy, fishing industry and innovative approach make her a valuable addition to the leadership team. We are so pleased that she has decided to come home after graduation to continue her work at VSI.” She will be responsible for managing all land operations, reporting to President/ CEO/COB, Dennis VanLandschoot.
