As we come into October, Munising Library will once again take the time to highlight the fight against censorship and join with other libraries, schools, bookstores, and groups around the world to call attention to the very real attack on our freedom to read. October 1 – 7, 2023 is Banned Books Week and the American Library Association and Unite Against Book Bans will mark this year’s event with a call to action on Let Freedom Read Day.

Seasonality is a huge part of our lives here in Alger County. While we mainly talk about it as part of our economy and infrastructure, seasonality can also have major impacts on what we do for entertainment and health in the Central Upper Peninsula.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, to celebrate the work our great dental hygienists and dentists do and to help raise awareness of the importance of maintaining good oral health. Good oral hygiene results in a mouth that looks and smells healthy.

To our fellow Grand Island Township Residents: This letter is to make you aware of our current need to fill our position of Township Clerk. In the event we are unable to fill this position, we will have 45 days to appoint somebody. If the position remains vacant after 45 days, we will no longer have control over the matter.

Americans may be starting to question the rosy narrative on electric vehicles. Ford has dropped prices for its brand-new line of electric pickups, the F-150 Lightning, by as much as $10,000.

The Apostle John concludes his gospel with these words, “Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written.” (John 21:25).

Q: I have been hearing more on the news about an apparently new disease called ‘acute flaccid myelitis’; I have two young children – is this something I should worry about? A: This disease, which is known as AFM, is quite rare, affecting 1-2 in a million children. CDC surveillance of this disease only began in 2014, because of the increasing number of cases being diagnosed in the U.S.

Congratulations to the Munising Beacon, especially to Editor Brice Burge, on becoming a printed publication. We are very happy for the Munising community to have a true newspaper again.

Eden Lutheran worships on Saturdays at 5 p.m., and on Sundays at 10:30 a.m., followed by coffee fellowship. Eden offers “open communion” at the Lord’s table, where all are welcome.

It is remarkable that when we say the Lord’s Prayer (“Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name….) that we include asking our Lord to “lead us not into temptation”. It recognizes that if we are being led by someone who we trust and are loyal to, that we are susceptible to being led into temptation.
