Mustangs win boys and girls track regionals

“If you came to the track meet today, you got your moneys worth in the last event.” Even with that exclamation, Munising boys and girls track coach Matt Mattson might have undersold the drama and entertainment at the MHSAA Regional 45 in Munising on Friday, May 19. Both the boys and girls Mustang 4x400 relay teams, the last event of the meet, were victorious on their ways to winning the state final qualifier.

Cota signs with Bay College

Hattie Cota signed her National Letter of Intent with the Bay College Norse at the Munising Middle/High School on Tuesday, May 23. She will join the Norse women’s cross country team Cota, joined by her mother Kristie Morrison-Cota, is the first female student athlete at Munising to sign a letter of intent this year in what’s been a busy time of Alger County athletes moving on to various collegiate levels. According to her mother, Cota chose Bay College after the Norse hired new coach Scott Carhoun. Cota will study elementary education.

The 2023 Munising Trout & Salmon Classic had a competitive and successful competition this year, with new records set for how much fish was brought in by the over 40 entries into the competition. “It was incredible to see the overall weight brought in by the teams,” Classic Director Bromley Hall said.

Mustangs win SCC title

The Munising Mustangs boys track team is continuing its winning ways with a Skyline Central Conference victory on Monday, May 21 at Rapid River High School. Munising doubled up the second-placed team Bark River-Harris 164-82 by winning eight of 17 total events. Superior Central finished tenth on the boys side. On the girls side, Bark River-Harris edged out Stephenson for the title, with Munising taking third. Senior Monique Brisson won the one- and two-mile runs to help push the Mustangs to a podium finish. Superior Central girls team finished tied for eighth with most of those points coming from Riley Moore’s victory in shot put.
