Several key streets in the City of Munising will see major upgrades this summer, as officials announce new infrastructure projects aimed at improving roads, utilities and pedestrian access. In addition to local street work, the city will begin a major rehabilitation of the Anna River Bridge.
Milling and resurfacing will take place on Grand Street and Cemetery Hill. These projects include pavement removal, drainage improvements and new asphalt. The upgrades are designed to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety and modernize aging infrastructure.
The work has been awarded to Bacco Construction of Iron Mountain and is expected to be completed in July, depending on the contractor’s schedule.
The city will also carry out a locally led project on Gage and St. Martins Hill roads, which includes drainage improvements and gravel replacement.
According to city officials, these efforts mark the next phase of Munising’s long-term infrastructure improvements following the recent $15.5 million M-28 corridor upgrades, which featured enhanced streetscapes and modernized utilities downtown. Planning is already underway for future projects, including improvements to East Prospect Street, East Onota Street and the Cedar Street/M-28 intersection.
Rehabilitation of the Anna River Bridge, a key link between neighborhoods and downtown, will also begin this summer. The project includes structural repairs, surface upgrades and aesthetic enhancements that preserve the bridge’s historic character.
Originally upgraded in the early 1990s to include pedestrian sidewalks, the Anna River Bridge remains a vital piece of the city’s transportation system. The current rehabilitation will extend the bridge’s service life and ensure it remains safe and functional for years to come.
Of the $495,000 construction cost, 95% is being covered by the Michigan Department of Transportation’s Local Bridge Program, with the remainder funded by the city’s major street fund.
The bridge project was awarded to Grand River Construction through MDOT’s local agency program. The bridge and adjacent section of H-58 will be closed through September during construction.
Separately, the city’s boat launch reconstruction is expected to wrap up this month. A second phase, including dock replacement and launch area expansion, is planned for fall 2026.
Construction on the street and bridge projects is scheduled to begin shortly after July 4. Closures will occur as needed. City officials, contractors and engineers will work to minimize disruptions and provide regular updates through the city’s website and other official channels.
