Outhouse Classic pins on sale The Trenary Outhouse Classic pins are now on sale at various locations in western Alger County. The pins are admission to the 31st annual event that brings in over 1,000 fans of the teams competing for fastest outhouse. The Classic is on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Trenary.
Seney Snowmobile Ball Saturday The 2023 Seney Snowmobile Association Groomers Ball will be Saturday at 5 p.m. at the Seney Groomer Barn. The event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Seney trail groomers, with 5050 raffles, door prizes and more.
ACS Tree Sale underway
The annual tree sale from the Alger Conservation District is underway, with local landowners able to pick up various trees, bushes and other plants that are designed to handle the local climate. This includes edible plants like berries, fruit trees and asparagus. A catalog is available at the conservation district office with pickup in May.
Rain lessens trail qualities Freezing rain and warm temperatures have done a number on local ski and snowmobile trails, with multiple grooming associations saying that they would not do any further work on the trails until colder weather returned to Alger County. Ice conditions for ice fishing has also deteriorated, prompting any fishers to use additional caution when on the ice.
Cruise ships to Escanaba this summer Escanaba is now listed as a port of call for the American Queen Voyages group, a cruise ship group based out of San Francisco. It is the first time that a lakes and ocean vessel will stop in the city, according to the company. Starting in May, 26 cruise ships are scheduled to visit Escanaba with day tours of various activities in the area.
One dead in Luce crash An Indiana man is dead after striking a tree in a snowmobile crash on Feb. 8. The man was travelling on Hallow Lake Trail when Robert Huffmaster of Valparaiso, Ind. ran off the trail and struck a tree. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the incident.
Trailer blown off Mackinac Bridge
A detachable trailer behind a pick-up truck was blown off the Mackinac Bridge on Wednesday, Feb. 15. The vehicle was heading Northbound in the right lane when wind gusts pushed the trailer off the hitch and into the straits below. A video of the incident was recorded by the car behind the trailer and has over 167,000 views in less than 24 hours.
