Businesses closed for holiday Courts are closed in observance of Good Friday, the first business day before Easter. Multiple restaurants and offices will have changed hours for the holiday, most notably Altran not offering rides on Sunday. Check with the individual businesses before travelling long distances.
Dairy Queen first seasonal business to open The Munising Dairy Queen has an estimated open time of Friday at 2 p.m. to start the summer tourism season. Over a dozen businesses in Munising and the surrounding areas are open just during the summer tourism seasons, but DQ is the first to open this season.
U.P. State Fair vendors deposits due soon The due date for signed agreements and deposits is Monday, April 10. This is for vendors looking to set up shop at the biggest fair in the region. Vendors are also being accepted for the Alger County Fair, Pictured Rocks Days and Munising’s Fourth of July Celebrations in Munising, Trenary and Grand Marais.
Circuit Court changes motion day The 11th Circuit Court in Alger County has officially switched to the first and third Tuesdays of the month. The court operated locally for decades on Wednesdays, but dates have switched across the four counties covered by the circuit. The first day of the new scheduling was Tuesday, April 4, but was mostly arraignments from district court or status conferences.
St. Ignace HS teen faces pornography charges An 18-year-old high schooler from St. Ignace was charged with five various counts of possession of child pornography and five counts of using a computer to commit a crime. Together, that is a maximum sentence of 10 years in jail. He was bonded by the 92nd District Court, but if the case advances, it would move to 11th Circuit Court, which includes both Mackinac and Alger Counties.
Lake State, GCC presidents depart Rodney Hanley has resigned immediately from his presidency at Lake Superior State University. President of Gogebic Community College George McNulty will retire effective June 30. With Bay College’s president also announcing retirement at the beginning of the school year, Finlandia University’s closure and NMU President Brock Tessman officially starting in February, only Michigan Tech will have a president in place for more than a year at the start of the 2023 Fall Semester. Tech’s Richard Koubek was hired in 2015.
