Matthew Clarence Cooley, a 39-year-old man from Kingsford, was apprehended on March 10 on charges of engaging in Child Sexually Abusive Activity and Using a Computer in Commission of a Crime.
The arrest was a result of an undercover operation that was conducted locally by Alger County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement available to assist. During the operation, an undercover officer posed as a 15-year-old girl on social media sites, and Cooley allegedly communicated interest and made plans to engage in sexual activity with the non-existant minor.
He then traveled to the Munising area where he was arrested by law enforcement. A search of the suspect’s vehicle resulted in the discovery of methamphetamine, and additional charges were authorized for possession.
Cooley is currently out on bond while awaiting his preliminary hearing in the 93rd District Court.
It should be noted that Cooley, like all criminal defendants, is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
