Mustangs win first game of season at Stephenson

The Munising Mustangs softball program recorded its first win of the season with a thrilling come-frombehind victory at the Stephenson Eagles on Tuesday, April 25, winning 29-19.

“The girls battled all day, and kept the game within reach going into the top half of the 5th. We were able to capitalize at the right opportunity, and swung the bats well with Ireland coming up with a huge hit that cleared the bases. I am happy to see these girls experience success early in the season with the work they have put in and get that W,” said Munising Head Coach Casey Ford.

Munising was down 18-11 in the high-scoring affair going into the fifth inning. The Mustangs were able to bat around the order with multiple heroic hits, including a bases-clearing double by senior first baseman Ireland Anderson to get back on top.

Kristin Joyner took the win, pitching four innings in relief for the Mustangs. She held Stephenson to just one run in the bottom of the fifth to seal the Munising victory.

The contest was the first of a doubleheader with the Eagles. The home team was able to earn the split with a 28-16 victory, also in five innings.

Munising was set to play North Dickinson on Thursday, but that game was cancelled due to weather. The team is hoping to get back in action Saturday at the Escanaba tournament. Next home games are slated for Monday, May 1 in a doubleheader against Bark River-Harris and a doubleheader Wednesday against Gwinn.
