Xmas in July begins today

The Xmas Motorsports Park in Christmas is hosting a Christmas in July event for this weekend’s races, incorporating special holiday events into the already packed weekend at the track. Races this weekend will also go towards AMA District 16 points standings.

Pasta Cook-Off Saturday in Trenary

A pasta cook-off and bake-off will be held at the Trenary Tavern on Saturday, July 22 at 4 p.m. as a fundraiser for fifth grade travel basketball programs in Western Alger County. There is no cost to enter a pasta dish, but those eating are asked to donate $10 and vote on the winner.

Stake the Lake registration open

The Stake the Lake Charity Walk will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16 in Munising. The registration for the annual event and fundraiser for the Eric R. Beverly Family Foundation is open and available at the foundation’s website.

Miners Falls Road construction delayed

The Miners Falls area will be temporarily closed beginning Monday, July 24th through Friday, July 28th during the hours of 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. EST. This includes Miners Falls Road and the parking area. Access to the Miners Falls Trail and Miners Falls will be unavailable during this time. This project was originally announced to be completed last week, but the project start time was delayed.

Grand Marais businesses open during construction

Multiple businesses, the Burt Township School Forest and the county’s only disc golf course remain open on H 58 east of Grand Marais. This is despite a “road closed to thru traffic” sign posted due to road construction and closure in Luce County. Motorists may drive to these locations and turn around anywhere in Alger County and visit the businesses and public spaces without impacting any construction crews.

MAPS remove Redmen/Redette moniker

The Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education voted 4-3 in favor of removing Redmen/Redettes as the athletic name for the school. The largest school system in the U.P. and home to a few Alger County students, Marquette had previously used Native American imagery alongside the moniker, which many considered a slur.
