Lindsey Slifka won the Alger County Fair’s 2023 Homemaker of the Year award. It was her first time winning the top accolade for exhibitors.
“I’m really excited because a lot of work went into this over the last year,” Slifka said.
To win the award, homemakers must have ribbon-winning entries in floriculture, food preservation, needlework and food preparation. Food preparation was new to the competition this year and included categories of yeast breads, quick breads, pies, cakes, decorated cakes, cookies and candy. Firstplace blue ribbons received 10 points, red ribbons seven points and white ribbons were worth four points. Slifka was most proud of her fresh floral arrangement, which was a sunflower arrangement based out of an antique fisherman’s basket.
