It was another successful year for the Munising Bay Cruisers as they hosted their 11th annual car show and cruise on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 15-16.
“The word is getting out about the show. We are getting a lot of participants coming up from downstate in all the big cities — Detroit, Lansing, Muskegon. They want to come here and enjoy what we have to offer,” said Gary Bovan, organizer of the show. “The car guys love it. They love the small-town feel.”
The show had over 100 cars involved, with owners coming from local communities of Munising, Wetmore and Au Train. Others came in from Wisconsin, Indiana and downstate as well, showcasing that car owners were willing to go out of their way to participate in the show. Vehicles ranged from custom hot rods to classic muscle cars. A number of newer speedsters were also available for the over 500 people who came to see the various driving machines.
A cruise along H-58 up to Grand Marais was held on Friday night. Ending with a smaller display of the vehicles at a block party in downtown Grand Marais, the companion event is a big draw for the show.
“The cruise has become one of the driving factors in the success of the show,” Bovan said. “Grand Marais did a great job with the block party.”
Bovan said that after 11 years of getting the show up and running, he is still awed by the support from the community. The land that holds the show is owned by the paper mill, which has provided the necessary space to operate given all the construction changes that impacted the show over the last three years. Numerous businesses have donated door prizes and volunteers have stepped up to help with the organization of the event.
Proceeds from the car show goes to veterans groups in the Alger County area.
