Trevor Nolan’s historic night leads Munising boys over Rapid River

A single game program record. Joining the 1000 point club. It is safe to say that Munising junior Trevor Nolan had a pretty good night on Tuesday, Feb. 13, as he scored a school record 44 points and he also hit the 1000 point mark, in a what was a lopsided 86-44 victory over Rapid River.

“We leaned on Trevor in the second half as he had a record breaking night,” head coach Terry Kienitz said. “His 44th point was also his 1000th career point. Quite an accomplishment for Trevor. He works harder than anybody I know. Spends a lot of time on his own in the gym working on his game.”

11 points in the first quarter by Jack Dusseault, seven by T. Nolan and five by Tyler Nelson helped the fifth ranked Mustangs take control early, and it was 29-12 after one. In the second, T. Nolan buried two threes and had 12 points, while Dusseault added four more, and it was 48-23 at the half.

T. Nolan buried four threes on his way to 18 points in that frame, and Munising led 6829 entering the fourth.

T. Nolan wasn’t done yet, as in the fourth he had two more threes, including the final shot that led to his 44th point of the night and 1000th for his career.

“We played good full court defense that led into some easy baskets,” Kienitz said. “We ran good transition offense that led into easy baskets.”

Also helping the cause, Dusseault had 19 points, Carson Kienitz had 13 points, Nelson added nine and Keegan Long scored one.

The Rockets had 12 points from Myles Anderson and 11 by Ethan Harrison.

On Monday, Feb. 12 Munising picked up a 51-39 win at Manistique.

“Strong game from Jack and Trevor,” Kienitz said. “Defense was really good in first half, holding them to 12 points. We didn’t shoot well in the second half, and they shot well in the second half. Credit Manistiques’ defense and intensity to get back in the game. A big three pointer by Carson Kienitz and eight-of-10 team free throws in the fourth held off their comeback.”

The Mustangs were led by Dusseault with 18 points and T. Nolan netted 16. Nelson put in eight points, which included four free throws in the fourth. Kienitz had five points in the fourth quarter, including the key three pointer and two free throws. Nolan Connaughton was also two-of-two from the line in the fourth and finished with four points in the contest.

Munising (16-4 overall) was at Powers North Central on Tuesday to wrap up the regular season. The Mustangs will take part in a Division 4 district next week, beginning on Wednesday, at the winner of Monday’s game between Engadine and Newberry.
