Munising’s Joe Kelley, Reece Cotey along with S-C Eli Penney named to UP All Star Game

The U.P. Football All Star Game organizers officially announced rosters last month; and three area players were honored by having their names called to take part in the event. The annual contest, which features some of the top seniors in the upper peninsula, will take place at the Superior Dome at Northern Michigan University on June 22, at 1 p.m.

Munising had two players named to the game; Joe Kelley and Reece Cotey.

“Both of these players are great examples of student- athletes,” their head coach Matt Mattson said. “They are great leaders on the field and in the classroom.”

Kelley plays center and defensive line and was a captain on last year’s team. He had 112 tackles, 12 for a loss, eight sacks and three fumble recoveries.

Cotey is a running back and outside linebacker and was a captain as well. He carried the ball 92 times for 713 yards and 10 touchdowns last fall, to go along with 11 receptions for 109 yards and two touchdowns.

Superior Central had Eli Penney get the honor to represent the team at the All Star game. Penney was primarily a guard and defensive end last fall. The highlight of his season was perhaps a 35yard touchdown reception against state powerhouse Powers North Central.
