Hosting Crystal Falls Forest Park in a pair of Skyline Central Conference games, the Superior Central softball team was hoping to keep their hot streak going. The Lady Cougars were able to do just that early on, winning game one 13-5, but they cooled off in game two, falling 11-6.
Sammy Johnson got the win in the opener, throwing all six innings and giving up five runs on five hits and 11 strikeouts. “She pitched a good game, she didn’t walk anybody,” head coach Rich Swajanen said.
S-C started the game off well, getting seven runs in the first inning. “Their pitcher was fairly fast, but we lined some nice shots in the first inning,” Swajanen said. “We hit the ball pretty good there.”
Peyton Adams had three hits in the game, Alice Hancock had a triple and a double, Stephanie Nordness had one double and one single and Keira McDonald had two hits in the first inning; one double and one single and two RBI.
In game two, McDonald took the loss. S-C was able to take a 7-1 lead after two innings, and the Cougars were unable to come all the way back. “We only had five hits, but we had 14 walks,” Swajanen said. “We left a lot of runners on base, we just couldn’t get the big hits.”
McDonald had one hit, reached base on walks three times and scored twice, Nordness had one single, one walk and one RBI, Johnson had one hit and scored a run with Adams and Payton Latvala each getting one hit. Hanock also reached base four times on walks, scoring once.
S-C was at home against North Dickinson on Wednesday, traveled to Carney-Nadeau onThursday and hosts Negaunee on Monday.
