Superior Central baseball sweeps up Stephenson

Game one was a close one. Game two wasn’t. Both were victories for the Superior Central baseball team Friday, as they took down host Stephenson 6-5 and 13-0 (four innings).

Bradley VanDamme got the win in the opener, with Jason Kanerva getting the save; they combined to strike out 13 batters and give up just four hits in the game.

“It was a real tough win as Stephenson made some nice defensive plays and took advantage of some baserunning mistakes,” head coach Greg Mannisto said. “It got tight at the end with the winning run on third, but Jason Kanerva closed the door with a big strikeout to end the game.”

In game two, things were much easier, and Blake Walther got the win, throwing four innings of shutout ball and he gave up just one hit while striking out seven. “It was a collective effort on offense as we took advantage of their young pitchers, drawing nine walks,” Mannisto said. “We didn’t leave many runners on base in this game and we put the ball in play when we got the opportunities to do so. The team is starting to find a groove defensively and our pitchers are throwing a lot of strikes and limiting walks.”

VanDamme, Walther and Trent Rutter had four hits and scored five runs on the day.

On Thursday, May 9 S-C hosted North Dickson and claimed wins of 8-1 and 13-3 (four innings).

In the opener, Rutter threw all six innings and gave up just one run and struck out nine.

“Rutter pitched a really nice game, we really played well behind him, not committing an error for the first time this year,” Mannisto said. CJ Adams and Logan Frusti had multiple hits in this game to lead the offense.

In game two, VanDamme, Walther and Adams shared time on the mound, combining to give up just four hits and strike out five batters. “Our onethrough- four hitters combined for nine hits, they set the table for a nice victory in the nightcap,” Mannisto said. “North Dickenson had a young squad, we took advantage of quite a few mistakes, the defense really played well.”

S-C was at Norway on Tuesday, played at North Dickinson on Thursday and heads to Escanaba on Monday.
