Munising tames Gogebic for 3-0 start to season

Munising’s fast start to the 8-player football season continued on Friday. The Mustangs were hosting Gogebic for a non-conference game and managed to take a two possession lead after the first quarter, never looking back on their way to a 3818 victory, though things weren’t exactly perfect.

“Played pretty sloppy at times, so I was disappointed in that aspect, but we made enough plays to win,” head coach Matt Mattson said. “We also had a great 98 yard 17 play drive in the second half.”

The Mustangs took a 16-0 lead after the first quarter, which included a fumble returned for a touchdown by Trevor Nolan. They also led 24-6 at the half and 32-12 entering the fourth quarter.

They were led on offense by Carson Kienitz who was seven-of-17 passing for 121 yards, to go along with two touchdowns and two interceptions. Kienitz also ran for 188 yards on 28 carries and Zack Lindquist rushed nine times for 61 yards. In all they had 370 yards of total offense; 249 of which coming on the ground.

“I thought our defense held its own,” Mattson said. “Carter Deatsman is having a great season at inside linebacker. Trevor Nolan made multiple big plays on defense, including the scoop and score in the first quarter.”

Munising (3-0 overall) heads to Brimley (1-2). The Bays have had a tough schedule so far this year. They opened the year with a 36-0 win over St. Ignace and then lost to Pickford 61-6 and dropped one to Rudyard last week, 36-30.

“We have a tough road trip to Brimley this week,” Mattson said. “They’re much better than they have been so we’ll need to clean up some things and play better.”
