The Munising Baptist soccer team had a close battle with Ojibwe Charter School on Monday. The Bobcats got past Ojibwe for a 2-1 victory in the Northern Lights League.
Dylan Swift and Isaac Beaverson scored Munising Baptist’s goals. Their efforts, combined with some steady defense, proved to be enough for the victory.
“I think we played our best all-around game,” MB head coach Hunter MacArthur said. “We didn’t get the ball in the net as much as we have in other games, but our offense played very well together and moved the ball well, and our defense played their best game of the year.”
Earning a victory over a dangerous league foe felt good for the team, MacArthur said, especially with the regular season winding down.
“Ojibwe’s number 10 is the best ball handler I have seen in the league and can shoot from anywhere,” MacArthur said. “Our defense was stout and kept him away from the net almost the entire game. He got off a lot of shots, but most were deflected by the defense or saved by Ethan Swift (in goal). Overall, a great game and a good confidence booster as we take a week off to rest before two tough games and the tourney.”
Last Saturday, the Bobcats played at Copper Country Christian, where they lost a 2-1 contest. Swift netted the goal on an assist from Beaverson. A day earlier, Munising Baptist defeated Copper Country, 4-3, in a shootout. Swift scored all of the Bobcats’ goals.
Munising Baptist hosts Big Bay de Noc at 5 p.m. Monday and will play at Hannahville on Tuesday. The NLL tournament is scheduled for Oct. 12 at Hannahville.
