That was a thriller. Superior Central’s football team took on a solid junior varsity squad at Norway on Sept. 26 and escaped with a wild 50-48 seesaw victory.
“Back-and-forth game from beginning to end,” head coach Todd Spranger said. “We ran out the clock with a few minutes left in the game. Won primarily with a solid running attack. One of our running backs, Aidan Korpi, went down with an injury and couldn’t play the second half. The injury will not affect him for upcoming games.”
The departure of one of their leading rushers caused the Cougars to change their game plan, but they still had plenty of offensive firepower to accomplish the job.
“We had to rely heavily on running back Gavin Vining to carry the load,” Spranger said. “Chris Kulik stepped up and did a great job replacing Korpi, and quarterback Will Spranger also had some nice runs to take some of the load off Vining. Our offensive line really came through, seeing we were limited in the plays we could call with Korpi out. Our defense, coached by Brandon Richards, played so well and had some very crucial stops. Norway played hard and was well coached.”
All things considered, it was a memorable night of football for the Cougars.
“A great game on a beautiful fall evening in a historic old stadium, with lots of loud fans having a lot of fun,” Spranger said. “The kind of football game everyone wants to be a part of.”
Superior Central’s scheduled game against Cedarville-DeTour’s JV team was cancelled because the Islanders did not have enough players. The Cougars head to Engadine on Oct. 9 to take on the Eagles’ JV squad.
