Munising Public Schools has announced the dates and times of its holiday concerts. This year’s theme is “Christmas at the Movies.”

The band concert is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 12.

The elementary concerts are scheduled for various times on Tuesday, Dec. 17. Kindergarten and first grade are up first, at noon. Pre-K is scheduled for 12:30 p.m., followed by second and third grades at 1 p.m. and fourth and fifth grades at 2 p.m.

Student poets to share their works

Munising High School’s poetry class will be showcasing the works of student poets on Friday, Dec. 13.

The readings will take place from 8:15 to 8:50 a.m. at Falling Rock Cafe & Bookstore.

The participating students are Sammy Cain, Layla Gould, Natalie Holmes-Niven and Brody McNally.

Finnish event set for Sunday

A program of music and Finnish food to celebrate Finnish Christmas and Independence Day is planned for Sunday, Dec. 8, at Messiah Lutheran Church in Marquette. The church is located at 305 W. Magnetic St.

All are welcome to attend. The program is presented by the Lake Superior Chapter of the Finlandia Foundation National. President Ron Hill will begin the event with a short review of how the Finns have celebrated their Independence Day on Dec. 6 since 1917.

Musical selections will include Oscar Forsman playing his accordion, Tanja Stanaway leading singing of familiar Finnish carols (words and translations will be provided) and Maija Niemi will perform on her violin with accompaniment.

Food will include kahvi ja pulla (coffee and cardamom bread), kropsua (oven coffee cake) with lingonberries, juustoa (Finnish cheese) and herring.

Members are invited to bring other Finnish specialties for the table. These do not need to be homemade.
