Superior Central’s boys basketball team just couldn’t find the offensive touch in its two days at the Carney-Nadeau Holiday Tournament last Friday and Saturday.
The Cougars lost to Hannahville in their opening-round game, 56-38, then came up short against Rapid River in the consolation contest, 33-26. “Hannahville is a good team with a really solid seven-to-eight rotation who can all contribute,” Superior Central head coach Adam Ely said. “We were 5-of-34 in two days from [3-point range]. We aren’t going to win any games until we make some shots.”
In the setback to Hannahville, SC started well. The Cougars got eight first-quarter points from Blake Tanner and an early 3 by Zander Bigger, and they led 1513 after one.
The Cougars, unfortunately, cooled off in the second and the Black Bears surged ahead 29-19 at the half. Ryder Kroupa hit a 3-pointer and had five points in the third, but SC was still facing a 36-28 deficit entering the fourth.
Kroupa hit another triple and had six points in the final stanza, and he led the team with 13 points on the night. Tanner finished with 12, and Bigger added nine. Noah Bell and Andrew Charlebois each scored two.
Hannahville went on to defeat Carney-Nadeau 75-49 in the championship game.
In the loss to Rapid River, Superior Central trailed 11-4 after the first quarter, with Kroupa and Bigger hitting a field goal each for the Cougars. Charlebois had a nice second frame, knocking down a pair of 3s and scoring all 10 of the team’s points, and they pulled within 17-14 at the break.
That deficit swelled to 27-21 entering the fourth, and Superior Central wasn’t able to pull off a comeback in the final minutes.
The Cougars were led by Charlebois, who finished with 10 points. Kroupa scored eight, Bigger netted seven and Tanner added three.
SC (1-5 overall) hosts Engadine today and stays at home to play Big Bay de Noc on Tuesday and North Dickinson on Thursday.
