Munising’s boys basketball team didn’t take much time off over the holiday break. On Thursday, Dec. 26, the Mustangs traveled to Ishpeming to take on the Westwood Patriots, who got 30 points from Ethan Marta in a 6451 victory.
“Tough game in Westwood, [but the] game was closer at times,” Munising head coach Terry Kienitz said. “Westwood played really physical, and not many fouls were called. This forced uncharacteristic turnovers and stunted our offense trying to run our sets. We focused defensively on stopping Marta. … Other Westwood players stepped up and scored when normally they don’t. But we played hard until the end and got better from this game.”
In the first quarter, Munising’s Carson Kienitz and Zach Lindquist hit two field goals apiece to account for their four points, but Marta got going early, netting nine in the opening frame as Westwood led 17-11 after one.
Munising’s Jack Dusseault was able to score six points in the second, while Lindquist hit a 3-pointer and had five points. Kienitz also drained a 3 in the frame, but the Mustangs were behind at the half, 35-25.
The solid game from Kienitz continued in the third, as he netted six more points. Trevor Nolan also hit all five of his free throws in the quarter, and the Westwood lead was 51-36 entering the fourth.
Kienitz netted five more points in the final quarter, and he finished with a team-high 18. Dusseault put in 13 points in the game, Lindquist scored nine, Nolan finished with seven and Nolan Connaughton added three.
Munising (6-2 overall) will play Brimley today at Little Ceasars Arena in Detroit and will host Manistique on Monday night. The Mustangs then play at Carney-Nadeau on Monday, Jan. 13.
