Ice Climbing

As winter settles in and temperatures drop, ice climbers from across the globe are preparing for the highly anticipated Michigan Ice Fest, set to take place in Munising from Feb. 11 to 16.

What started as a small gathering of 10 climbers in 1991 has evolved into one of North America’s premier ice climbing festivals, drawing more than 1,400 participants from 37 states and seven countries. This year promises to deliver the perfect blend of adventure, community and camaraderie against the breathtaking backdrop of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Michigan Ice Fest

Michigan Ice Fest serves as both a celebration of the sport and a welcoming entry point for newcomers.

“This isn’t just an event; it’s a family reunion,” said organizer Bill Thompson, who took over the festival in 1995. “Many participants return year after year, some not even climbing but coming to reconnect with friends and soak in the atmosphere.”

The festival’s structure accommodates climbers of all skill levels, from first-timers to seasoned professionals.

“Munising is unlike any place I’ve climbed,” said Karsten Delap, a longtime instructor and one of the most recognized names in the climbing world. “The ice formations, the community, the camaraderie — it’s all incredible.

“You might climb something one year, and the next year it’s completely different or gone. That unpredictability keeps it exciting and fresh.”

Festival

The festival offers a range of clinics led by expert instructors, covering fundamental ice climbing techniques, advanced alpine skills and even mountain safety. Climbers can also participate in guided ascents of Munising’s most iconic formations, including the awe-inspiring Bridalveil Falls.

“There’s nowhere else in the world where you can climb ice over a [freezing] lake while waves crash below you,” Thompson said.

The festival kicks off next Tuesday with the opening of headquarters at Alger Parks and Recreation Department. Here, climbers can check in, gear up and connect with fellow participants. By Wednesday night, attendees will gather at the Barge Inn for the first of many after-parties — a long-standing tradition at Ice Fest.

Thursday features a lineup of activities, including coffee talks at Gallery Coffee, walk-up climbing at the Curtains Demo Area and inspiring evening presentations by climbing legends Angela VanWiemeersch and Marcus Garcia.

Friday brings a focus on inclusivity and community-building, with Drew Hulsey’s “Every Body Climbs” presentation challenging traditional notions of who can participate in the sport.

Social Event

That evening, climbers can let loose at the “Ice Fest is for Lovers” social event, complete with climber speed dating and palm readings. The night wraps up with a lively street party at East Channel Brewing, where locals and visitors come together under the winter sky.

Saturday, the festival’s peak day, features the highly anticipated Remote Route Challenge, where experienced climbers take on Munising’s most demanding routes. Meanwhile, the Women’s and Gender Expansive Climbers Meet-Up provides a welcoming space for underrepresented groups in climbing.

The evening ends with presentations by accomplished climbers Andres Marin and Jack Tackle, offering a dose of inspiration drawn from decades of experience on the ice.

The event’s final day, Sunday, Feb. 16, provides one last chance to get on the ice before climbers gather at the Community Center for a farewell raffle. As participants pack their gear and prepare to leave, the prevailing sentiment is not “goodbye” but “see you next year.”

Impact

The festival’s impact extends far beyond the climbing community. It generated $1.3 million for the local economy in 2022 and plays a crucial role in supporting Munising’s high-angle rescue team. Additionally, the Ice Fest youth scholarship program offers local students free access to climbing clinics, helping to inspire the next generation of climbers.

For those looking to get involved, Michigan Ice Fest offers a variety of opportunities, from volunteering to registering for clinics.
