The Munising City Commission met for a concise but productive session on May 7 that advanced ongoing park and facility upgrades, revisited a longstanding city ordinance and narrowed the field of candidates for the city manager position.
During public comment, a local resident addressed commissioners with concerns about the deteriorating condition of the city’s tennis courts, noting uneven surfaces and damage from past vandalism. The courts, which are used by school teams as well as the public, are reportedly so degraded that consistent play is difficult.
City officials responded with good news: A resurfacing project is already scheduled for the third week of June. The upcoming repairs will use a more rigorous application process and improved weather standards to ensure lasting quality.
The commission approved a progress payment to Cross Construction for work on the Tourist Park bathrooms. Improvements include a new commercial-grade two-part epoxy flooring system, which has already been installed. The project remains ahead of schedule and may be completed within a week, pending final water treatment setup.
Commissioners also approved a contract with Penchura LLC for the removal and reinstallation of playground equipment from Brown Addition to Tourist Park.
City officials emphasized that professional removal was preferred due to the degraded condition of some components and the technical nature of reinstalling compliant play structures. The cost will be covered by user fees collected through campground rentals, not general tax revenue.
Commissioners revisited Ordinance No. 12, “Peace and Good Order,” after questions were raised about the constitutionality of certain language, specifically clauses regarding abusive or obscene language.
A legal review by the city attorney was shared with the board, but further procedural clarification is needed. In particular, commissioners asked whether public posting or multiple readings are necessary when removing unconstitutional language under the city charter. The matter was tabled until a later meeting.
The commission unanimously approved the appointment of Jody Irvin to the Planning Commission. Commissioners noted Irvin’s past community involvement and managerial experience as positive indicators of her fit for the role.
In a closed session, commissioners reviewed applications for the city manager position being vacated by Devin Olson. They voted to proceed with interviews with four applicants. The commission approved a $350 travel stipend for interviewees from outside of the U.P. to help offset mileage and lodging costs.
Interviews are expected to be scheduled in batches of two to avoid fatigue and accommodate commissioners’ work schedules. Friday sessions were floated as a possible option.
During the second public comment time, a concern about public parking access near the Brown Addition Tot Lot was raised. Local business overflow reportedly makes it difficult for families to park and access the playground.
The commission agreed to consult legal counsel regarding potential signage options or other strategies for managing street parking near public recreational spaces.
The Munising City Commission meets at 6 p.m. on the first Wednesday and third Monday of each month.
