Sign-up for Summer Reading program begins today

Do not let the summer slide happen to your children. Sign them up for the Summer Reading program.

We will have a wonderful slate of activities and performances again this summer. We encourage you to get your children involved and ready to Color Their World with great stories and fun times from the Munising Library. They can earn great stuff along the way, too.

The last day of school — today, June 6 — is the first day to sign up for summer reading. Thursday, June 12, is our Summer Reading Tie-Dye Kick-Off Event. Beginning at 1 p.m., youth ages 12 and under are welcome.

Join us next Wednesday, June 11, as we host a visit with Tim Schulz, a Michigan Notable author. Schulz will be here discussing his novel, “A Cast Away in Montana.”

This author talk and book signing will begin at 6 p.m., and we hope to see you there. This Michigan Notable Book event is funded by a Michigan Humanities Grant and the Library of Michigan. We are launching our Saturday Summer Skill Share programming with “Wild Foraging for Edible Plants” with traditional herbalist and natural health educator Katie Schneider at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 14, at the library. This incredibly popular program is back and will be going outdoors, so please dress accordingly.

New book

This week’s new book is “The Love Haters” by Katherine Center. Here is the publisher’s synopsis: Katie Vaughn has been burned by love in the past, and now she may be lighting her career on fire.

She has two choices: Wait to get laid off from her job as a video producer or, at her coworker Cole’s request, take a career-making gig profiling Tom “Hutch” Hutcheson, a Coast Guard rescue swimmer in Key West. The catch? Katie’s not exactly qualified. She can’t swim — but pretends that she can.

Plus, Cole and Hutch are brothers. And they don’t get along. Next stop: paradise! But paradise is messier than it seems. As Katie gets entangled with Hutch (the most scientifically good-looking man she has ever seen … but maybe a bit of a love hater), along with his colorful aunt Rue and his rescue Great Dane, she gets trapped in a lie. Or two. Swim lessons, helicopter flights, conga lines, drinking contests, hurricanes and stolen kisses ensue — along with the chance to tell the truth, to face old fears and to be truly brave at last.
