The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians announced that it will appeal an August 24, 2023, ruling from U.S. District Court Judge Paul L. Maloney that would regulate all 1836 Treaty Tribes’ fishing rights for the next 24 years.

Rain couldn’t damper the annual 4-H and MSU Extension Harvest Festival on Saturday, Oct. 7 at the MSU South Farm in Chatham. The event had over 100 people from dozens of families enjoying some of the fall activities in rural Michigan.

Many anglers say fall fishing for splake on Lake Superior is an experience unparalleled anywhere else in Michigan. When temperatures begin to drop and leaves start to turn, the splake bite picks up as the fish move nearshore.

Long lines formed for the over 40 chilis at the Skandia Township Hall for the Fourth Annual Skandia Harvest and Chili Cook-off on Saturday, Oct. 7. Over 300 people, including many from Western Alger County, attended the event that featured kids games, pumpkin weighing and more.

This autumn, a revitalized bait fish population is contributing to bigger fish and higher catches of trout and salmon off the coast of Alger County. Lake Superior’s population of cisco, also known as lake herring, has swelled to levels not seen since at least 1984.
