Region updated on blastomycosis outbreak

A total of 104 cases of blastomycosis (both confirmed and probable) have been identified among employees, contractors, and visitors of the Billerud Paper Mill in Escanaba. Thirteen of these cases have resulted in hospitalization and there has been one previously reported death associated with the outbreak. These numbers are the latest update from Public Health Delta & Menominee Counties (PHDM), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Mather Elementary 2022-2023

We are pleased to announce that Ryan Cook has been chosen as our Student of the Week. Ryan is in Kindergarten and is the son of Jon and Shelby Cook. Ryan is a very considerate classmate. He is always willing to lend a hand to fellow students having difficulties with daily routines. Math is his specialty, and he often scores 100% on assignments. However, his favorite class is gym. This summer, Ryan wants to learn how to play basketball and hockey like his mom and dad. When he is not spending time outdoors with his family, Ryan likes to play video games that let him build and be creative like Minecraft. Congratulations to Ryan and his family!

Sold and Consolidated

Both of Munising’s grocery stores — Bob’s IGA in Downtown Munising and Family Fare on the Eastern side of M-28 — have sold to Houghton-based grocery store Pat’s Foods. Terms of the sales were not released, but none of the roughly 45 employees at the grocery stores will be laid off as a result of the sale.

Munising Drama Club performs today The Munising Drama Club is performing “Rainbow Fish”, a stage adaptation of the famous Marcus Pfister children’s book. There will be two performances, Friday, April 21 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 23 at 3 p.m., with both performances at the Mather Auditorium.

Kingsford man arrested in cybersting

Matthew Clarence Cooley, a 39-year-old man from Kingsford, was apprehended on March 10 on charges of engaging in Child Sexually Abusive Activity and Using a Computer in Commission of a Crime. The arrest was a result of an undercover operation that was conducted locally by Alger County Sheriff’s Office and other law enforcement available to assist.

SC threat update

Multiple agencies and officials have given updates on the threat situation made at Superior Central on Tuesday, April 11. According to the Michigan State Police, a 15-yearold male made a threat to bring a gun to the school on Wednesday, April 12.
