Munising All-Veterans Memorial renovated

Local veterans groups fundraised to replace the wall due to disrepair and buckling and replace it with a new aluminum fencing. Fundraising efforts provided over $20,000 to the project, which meets the low end of the overall estimated costs, however fundraising is still continuing through the Vietnam Veterans of America for further upkeep and installation costs.

Welcome Ryder James!

Welcome home Ryder James Matthews! Ryder was born on Monday, May 8, 2023 to Travis Matthews and Dannie Hebert of Munising. This is the couple’s first child. Ryder was seven pounds, 12 ounces and 21 inches long at birth. The baby and mother have enjoyed a healthy first week together surrounded by friends and family. Congratulations!

Snowstorm fallout

Communities in Alger County are continuing to clean up after damage from the unusually wet snow storm from Sunday, April 30-Tuesday, May 2. The storm itself saw over 10 inches of precipitation in parts of Alger County ranging from days-long power outages, landslides and flooding.

Over 100 people were at the Munising School Public Library to celebrate the 2023 HomeTown Art Fair, which showcases artwork made by Munising students in each grade. While most of the art focused on two-dimensional drawings and paintings, some pieces were sculptures made with ceramics or other materials.

East Channel Brewing Company revives the regular Science on Tap series with a talk tonight about managing state forests. Michigan Department of Natural Resources scientists and foresters will provide detailed discussion about how the government reviews and maintains various state forests, including those in Alger County. The discussion starts at 6 p.m. in the upstairs area of the microbrewery.

With today’s edition, The Munising Beacon enters its second year of consistent publication in Munising and Alger County. The first edition was released on Friday, May 13, 2022 with the headline story focusing on the missing time capsule from the Mather Centennial ceremony, the Livermores purchasing the Au Train grocery store and local fundraising efforts at an East Channel trivia night.

Mather Elementary learns through mock trial

One of the fourth grade classes at Mather Elementary participated in a mock trial at the Alger County Courthouse on Wednesday, May 10. The students were able to see how the legal system worked in a controlled environment, with numerous elected officials and county law enforcement and court staff assisting in the project.

Munising Public Schools is reminding students, staff and visitors that local ordinances prohibit outdoor recreational vehicles (ORVs) from legally reaching school grounds. The ordinance in question is 2015-1, which allows ORVs and snowmobiles to leave a private resident and go straight to an approved trail.
