PFN, downstate WINN set to merge

Peninsula Fiber Network, LLC (PFN) and WINN Communications announced today an agreement that will see the two companies merging, pending regulatory approvals. PFN is a leading provider of fiber optic-based telecommunications and Next Generation 9-11 services throughout Michigan, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota and includes overlaps with numerous more local groups like the Muninsingbased Hiawatha Communications. WINN Communications is an established telecommunications firm operating a fiber optic network in central Michigan with its headquarters in Mount Pleasant.

Munising School Public Library notes

The library’s book club, Alger Reads, is in full swing with the start of the new year. It meets the fourth Tuesday of the month at 6:00 pm in the library. Our next meeting will be Tuesday, February 28 at 6:00 pm and we will be discussing the book The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune. It’s a bestselling contemporary fantasy story from the Lambda Literary Award winning author. Request to hold your copy now so you can read it before our next meeting. Bergman appointed to committees

Jack Bergman (R-Watersmeet) announced he will serve on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, the House Armed Services Committee, and the House Budget Committee in the 118th Congress. “Serving on these three critical committees in the new Republican majority is an honor and I’m ready to hit the ground running.

Hill starts off 109th term

State representative Jenn Hill (D-Marquette) was named to four committees for the Michigan House of Representatives in her first month as Alger County’s voice in Lansing. The 109th district representative was named to the Energy, Communications and Technology committee, the Local Government and Municipal Finance committee, the Higher Education committee and the Natural Resources, Environment, Tourism and Outdoor Recreation committee. Hill was named as the majority vice chair for the final committee.

Board officers retained by MPS

The Munising Public Schools Board of Education will be shifting meeting dates for the 2023 calendar year, but will keep its o ers after meeting on Tuesday, January 17. The board unanimously retained Paula Ackerman as president, Jason Brisson as vice president, John Carr as secretary and Lara Bender as treasurer.
