Disappointing Trail Conditions Force Cancellation of UP200, Midnight Run, and Jack Pine 30 Sled Dog Races

MUNISING - In a disappointing turn of events, the Upper Peninsula Sled Dog Association (UP200) announced the cancellation of the highly anticipated UP200, Midnight Run, and Jack Pine 30 sled dog races originally scheduled for February 16-18, 2024. The decision was made due to deteriorating trail conditions and concerns for the safety of mushers and their canine companions.

Women in the Woods snowshoe event – Valley Spur, Munising

On Thursday, February 1, a group of enthusiastic women joined foresters Sara Kelso (Alger Conservation District) and Anna Ellis (Michigan State University Extension) for a guided hike on snowshoes just outside of Munising at Valley Spur. Despite the unseasonably warm temperatures, spirits were high and the trail was in great condition. The loop hiked had a lot of rolling hills and twists and turns which led us through many different forest types and was suitable for all levels of snowshoeing experience.

Limestone Township Board Discuss Board of Review Changes, Increase in Residential Properties

The agenda covered the ongoing discussion of uses for leftover COVID-19 relief funds, the resignation and replacement of a township Board of Review member, and the sharp projected increase in residential properties in the area in 2024.

For the second year, the Natural Resources class is preparing for another smolt release this spring and would like to continue expanding the curriculum and the partnership by engaging students at the Munising Middle-High School in hands-on water quality studies of the local Lake Superior Watershed, including the Anna River and its tributaries. Science teacher Hilary Ludecke is working with the Rotary International Club of Munising, the Alger Conservation District (ACD), and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) to raise Chinook Salmon In The Classroom. In order to conduct these hands-on studies Mrs. Ludecke and the students need to raise enough money to purchase a classroom set of Vernier probes and sensors, as well as software to analyze the data collected, and much more. January 19, 2024 issue School Board Approves New Basketball Backstop; Discusses Bus Driver Situation In this issue the amounts for the sinking fund were referenced as dollars instead of mills. The information should read as follows: The sinking fund ballot resolution came next on the agenda. They are currently asking for 1.5 mills which is down from 1.9 mills from last year. There is thought that if they pare this number down much more, they “won’t be able to accomplish what they set out to accomplish” according to Mr. Travis, with another 1.6 mills on the debt levy. This was approved by the board.
