Protecting the future of farming

Across the United States, the farming community is aging. According to the National Agricultural Statistics Service, the average age of a farmer was 58.1 in 2022, a 0.6 year increase from 2017. As this average rises, we see that the older generations are fanning more than the younger ones; a fact that raises some alarms in terms of accessing food and goods.

Munising Bay on Track for Record Late Freeze-Up

There have probably been a lot of us this winter watching the progress of the Munising Bay freeze-up—or lack thereof. Shore ice started to form on Tuesday, January 16th when the temperature dropped below zero for several days. By Friday, January 19th, about half the bay was iced over (mostly on the east side) and it seemed like it would be just another week or so before snowmobiles would be crisscrossing the bay.

The town embraced the setback and transformed it into a day of community bonding and winter festivities.

By now, you may know that your mindset and your thoughts can affect your mental health, but did you know that they can also affect your physical health? Studies have shown that there is a strong connection between health and positivity, or positive thinking. A study from Johns Hopkins University found that people with heart disease who have a positive outlook were less likely to have a major cardiovascular event (like a heart attack) than those with a negative outlook.

Munising School Public Library News

Alger Reads Book Club meets this coming Tuesday, Feb. 27th at 6:00pm to discuss Eden Waits by Maryka Biaggo. Based on the true story of Upper Michigan’s utopian experiment in Schoolcraft County. In 1893, financial panic imperils the settlement homesteaded by Abraham and Elizabeth Byers. Abraham, a preacher and self-proclaimed man of the people, rails against greed and corruption and launches the Hiawatha Colony, a product-sharing community designed to support its members through self-sufficiency. All are welcome to attend the discussion of this fascinating book.

County Seeks Renewal of Library Millage Feb. 27

The current library millage for Alger County will expire at the end of 2024. The County Library Board has placed a millage renewal on the ballot for the Feb. 27, 2024 election. In 2008 Public Library supporters asked the Alger County Commission to form the Alger County Library Board. The board consists of 5 people, appointed by the Board of Commissioners for terms of 3 years each. The Alger County Library Board administers the county library fund and they are responsible for contracting with the Munising Public Schools on behalf of the Munising School Public Library (MSPL) to administer public library service on a county-wide basis.

Munising Mail Carriers Retire:

Munising, MI – Two familiar faces in the Munising postal service, Lori Stewart and Carl Sanford, bid farewell to their long and commendable careers with a retirement party at the Barge Inn on Saturday, February 17. The Beacon caught up with them during the celebration to capture their reflections on their decades of service.
