Women’s Snowshoe Hike

Join the Alger Conservation District and Michigan State University Extension for their 2024 Women in the Woods snowshoe series! Come be a part of a community of women who appreciate the forests around them while getting fresh air and exercise to fight off cabin fever. The first trail of the season will be on Thursday, February 1st, at Valley Spur Cross Country Trail in Munising. The hike runs from 4:30 – 6:00 p.m.. In the weeks to which follow, the trail will take hikers to Blueberry Ridge Pathway in Marquette on February 8th and to Al Quaal Recreation Area in Ishpeming on February 15th.

Alger County Organizational Meeting

The County Commissioners met on Jan 4, 2024. Dean Seaberg (District 2) was elected Chair, Mickey Rondeau (District 5) was elected Vice-Chair. Some discussion was made on the salaries of the commissioners. In the end, it was unanimously agreed to change their current payment structure to a flat rate of $6,000 per year, plus milage consistent with IRS standards.

Alger County Approves ATV for Rescue Work; Cuts Contract with Charter

The Alger County Committee of the Whole met Jan 8th at 5:00 p.m.. Among the topics discussed was the End of Year Report from Rebecca Burns, a Veteran’s Service Officer who spoke on last year’s assistance to local veterans. She also announced several veterans will be assisting during this summer’s car show to benefit the Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial.

State Of The State Cover Page Contest 2024

Governor Whitmer is challenging Michigan’s K-12 students to come up with a creative design for the 2024 State of the State program cover following the theme: A Classic Michigan Story. During her State of the State address, Governor Whitmer will share her vision for Michigan and plan to address key issues to put Michigan first, including jobs, education, infrastructure, and Michigan’s strong economic progress.

Poet Laureates Established

For the first time, Upper Peninsula County Poet Laureate and Upper Peninsula CountyYouth Poet Laureate positions have been established in the majority of the counties in the Upper Peninsula. Recipients were selected based off of input from Escanaba Area Public Schools, Forsyth Township Public Library, Forest Park Schools, Grandpa’s Barn, Island Bookstore, Kenneth J. Shouldice Library, Ontonagon Township Library, Superior Central School District, Tahquamenon Area School-Public Library, and Amanda Wais.
