Eastern Regional Forester Gina Owens has announced the selection of Shannon Rische as the forest supervisor for the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, where she has served as acting forest supervisor since January 2023.

The Munising Hoop House project is trying to create a buzz by adding a new bee hive. The multi-tray hive box has already started, with the hive installed with honey and brood.

The Grand Marais community hosted the 24th annual Splash-In on the Bay, an annual event showcasing seaplanes and amphibious aircraft from around the Midwest. Roughly 15 planes participated in various contests in front of roughly 500 airplane enthusiasts.

While such sights can be startling, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminds everyone that it is common — summer heat conditions can cause fish and other creatures such as turtles, frogs, toads and crayfish to die.

Alger County will receive a portion of over $100,000 in grant funding for deer habitat improvement projects from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. According to the press release, the project will impact a parcel of land in western Alger County by turning old timber trails into environments rich in food for deer.

Along with melting snow and emerging spring flowers comes the renewed sense of hope for new beginnings and life.
