Almost everything was against the Manistique Emeralds Varsity co-op in their home contest against the Big Rapids Cardinals on Saturday. Great opportunities to score were just off the mark. Thirteen penalties were called against the Emeralds, compared to just three on the Cardinals. Multiple Emeralds players spent more time in the box than on the ice. They were outnumbered for nearly half the game. Toward the end of the game, Head Coach John Nutkins got ejected and is currently suspended as a result.

The 2023/2024 Munising middle school competetive cheer team is learning how to work as a team. Competetive cheer is a demanding sport, even at the middle school level. These athletes have done a great job this year learning the sport, skills, and technique. We have 3 returning girls and 6 first year girls so it is definitely a building year for our program. We work closely with our varsity team. This is my second year coaching and while it is demanding it is also very rewarding. We placed 3rd at the manistique invitational and I am proud of the performance these girls put on the mat. Go mustangs!

The 2023/2024 Munising Varsity Cheer team is in the process of rebuilding our program and keeping our tradition alive. We are a small team of 4 girls who are some of the most dedicated and hard working girls there are. Our goal this year to to beat previous scores at each competition and to make it of course to a State Finals! We have overcome many struggles this year including losing team members and injuries that have prevented us from competing at the most recent competition, but we are getting ready to come back stronger than ever this weekend at the Escanaba Invitational. We can’t wait to get on the mat and put out three solid rounds to show we are small but Stangs always stand tough!

On Saturday January 6 th , Manistique Hockey stopped the Big Rapids 1-0. It was a tight game with 11 penalties killed. According to coach Nutkins, the Manistique team (comprised of players from Manistique, Munising, and Newberry), had a “great defense” and Alex Noble was a stand-out player.

For more than fifteen years, hockey players young and old have come together on Sunday nights at the Alger Centennial Arena in Munising. For a small fee of $7 you can gear up and get out on the ice with like-minded individuals to play for a couple of hours.
