Mustangs beat Manistique 45-37
After a heartbreaking loss to Norway to open the 2023-24 season, Munising was able to pass the pain along to rival Manistique 45-37 on Friday, Dec. 1 in Munising. It was the first win of the year for the Mustangs and the season opener for the Emeralds.

The Superior Central Cougars varsity girls and boys basketball teams hosted the Hannahville Soaring Eagles Thursday in their respective contests, the girls hosting a scrimmage and the boys a regular season Central Upper Peninsula conference game.

On Wednesday, Dec. 13, Munising and Superior Central will once again combine for the Toys For Tots drive at a pre-holiday basketball game. This is the second year of the event, held in memory of SC student Neo John Paul Wilson, but this year’s game will be a boys contest held in Munising instead of a girls game at SC. Nonwrapped items can be brought to the game or dropped off at SC Schools starting Monday.

Superior Central reboots football program, lets Trader go
Josh Trader is no longer the head coach of the Superior Central football team as the school has decided to fire the second-year skipper with many pressing issues needing to be addressed about the future of the program. “We appreciate Josh’s efforts in his two years here, but feel that it is in the best interest of the football program at this time,” SC Superintendent Bill Valima said.

Munising begins title defense The Munising Mustangs boys basketball team started off their MHSAA Division 4 boys basketball season on Tuesday, Nov. 28 at home against Norway. The results of that game was after deadline of this week’s edition and the story is available on The Munising Beacon Facebook page. The Mustangs host Manistique tonight.

Lumen Christi answers early deficit to win D7 championship
Jackson Lumen Christi piled up 92 percent of its total yards Sunday morning on the ground. So, trailing by three points with time running down in the fourth quarter and facing a 4th-and-4 situation on the Menominee 11-yard line, the Titans, of course, went to the air.

Norse women back to even
The Bay College women’s basketball team pulled back to the .500 mark over the weekend with a pair of victories at the Lindquist Classic hosted by Gogebic Community College. The Norse rallied in the fourth quarter to beat the host GCC Samsons, 58-48, on Saturday, and then dominated the North Central Michigan Timberwolves, 97-57, Sunday afternoon.
