100 years ago – Summer tourist business now in full swing

Michigan’s 1923 resort and tourist season, which at the outset promised to set a new record for the number of visitors from out of the state who would come to enjoy the Michigan woods, lakes and streams, is in full swing.

Reports to the Detroit Tourist and Convention Bureau from every part of both peninsulas indicates the number of tourists and resorters now in Michigan to be the greatest in history for this time of year, and also that visitors will be coming in ever increasing numbers until coll weather ends the vacation period.

From reports compiled by other tourist and resort organizations and from resort and hotel owners themselves, upwards of $100,000,000 was spent by tourists in Michigan last year. The local secretary declares there is no doubt that this figure will be increased this year.

75 years ago – State’s new “Milk Law” in effect today

Michigan becomes the first state in the Union to have a state-wide pasteurization law.

The effective date of the law was set to coincide with the great influx of tourists who require increased supplies of milk in the resort areas during the summer vacation months.

50 years ago – GM First National Bank moves into new building

Personnel at the Grand Marais Branch of the First National Bank were busy this weekend moving into their new building. The First National Bank opened for business in Grand Marais on January 31, 1972 and its offices have been housed in a mobile banking unit since that time.

Groundbreaking ceremonies for the Grand Marais Branch of the First National Bank of Alger County took place on March 28, 1973. The new bank, located on the east side of Lake Avenue, was expected to be ready for use by Labor Day.

25 years ago – Library completes transfer

The Munising Library has completed its move from Mather Middle School into the Munising High School. To find the library, which is on the west end of the school, turn into the school driveway and ju st before the bottom of the hill
take a sharp right. The library opened its doors to the public on Tuesday, June 30, 1998.

The library now combines the best of the old library and the high school library. In addition to the move, the resources of both libraries were combined into one facility.

10 years ago – Munising City Commission approves budgets, more

The Munising City Commission met for two full-group sessions in the past week, in order to approve the next year’s budget and to conduct regular business. The $1.96 million general fund budget reflects stabilized sources of income, including what had been in recent years a severely reduced revenue sharing income from the state.

The commission offered a second reading of Ordinance 2013-3, which allows for the 20-year extension of the Downtown Development Authority.
