100 years ago – Traveling baseball team beats locals

The Illinois Giants, colored professional baseball team, defeated the locals yesterday afternoon by a 7-0 count. All places of business closed for the game and a big crowd witnesed (sic) the contest.
The game was covered by both The Munising News and the Cloverland Farmer, with the latter publication referring to the travelling team by a racist slur and the event as a “spectacle”.
75 years ago – Sailors reach Grand Island after fight with snake

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Garrick and their son-in-law, of Grand Rapids, were fishing from a boat in Murray’s Bay, off Grand Island, Friday when a large water snake circled the boat, became entangled in the outboard motor and stopped it. In trying to pull the snake away, they cut it in half.
Unable to get going again, the trio reached Grand Island, built a fire and “sent out” distress signals with smoke. They were rescued by Gene Scott.
50 years ago – Chatham, Munising receive over $2.5 million for city housing, two sewer projects

Federal grants totalling over $2.5 million have been awarded to the City of Munising and Village of Chatham, according official word received during the past week.
The major portion of this money has been allocated to the City of Munising, which will permit the immediate go-ahead on construction of its new 40 unit Senior Citizens Housing complex on the Munising bayshore as well as 16 non-elderly housing units elsewhere in the city and for construction of its new Secondary Waste Water Treatment Plant.
25 years ago – New Moon under new management

After 14 years in business, Alice Lintula has sold the New Moon Bar, in Eben, to Heather Taskey. Heather, who has worked at the New Moon for the past year and half, said “I want to stay in the area and I saw this as a good opportunity to remain here and use my training skills.
Heather took over the ownership on June 1, 1998. Since then, she, family members, and friends have been working hard renovating, painting and remodeling the building.
10 years ago – The Peoples Store closes

After 68 years of serving the Munising area, The Peoples Store is closing.
After being purchased in 1945 by the late Morris Fineman and his wife Beatrice, the store has been in business serving the community in various locations.
Now, after 44 years and a lifetime of involvement in the store, Bob Fineman is retiring and the remaining portion of The Peoples Store will be closed.
