Nation’s Chief dies suddenly

Warren G. Harding died inadvertently in San Francisco. After suffering from a ptomaine poisoning, the Commander in Chief developed pneumonia. However, after later attempts to improve, the president passed away with his wife by his side. Calvin Coolidge was sworn in at 2:30 a.m. on August 3.

Work is started on Highway 13

A project which will give Alger County its first hard-surfaced East-South outlet was begun last week when Thornton Brothers, Hancock contractors, began the job of laying 11 miles of blacktop of Federal Forest Highway 13 south of Wetmore. The job will take several weeks to complete. The firm’s bid for the work was $129,581.71.

Burt Township spends revenue sharing funds

Burt Township Board has begun to put its revenue sharing funds to work for the people. After careful consideration and checking into various prices in nearby communities, the Board has purchased a new police car for $3,200. The new vehicle, which will be used by Marshal Robert Pell, was obtained from Rahilly’s Ford-Mercury dealer in Newberry.
Also already at work for the community is the new bulldozer being used at the Grand Marais sanitary landfill operation.

Munising hires new manager

The City of Munising has a new City Manager. Perry Franzoi, presently the City Manager for downstate Saugatuck, has agreed to make the move back to the Upper Peninsula and take over Munising’s Manager position. Franzoi is scheduled to start here on Sept. 28, 1998. Prior to taking the position at Saugatuck, he was township superintendent for Breitung for five years.

Sowa hits milestone at 2013 Alger County Fair

Chatham resident Treasa Sowa hit a milestone few will reach, as the 2013 event marked the 40th year Sowa has entered exhibits for display and judging at the Alger County Fair. With an average of 80 to 90 entries each year, Sowa now has well over 1,500 blue ribbons to show, as well as Alger County “Homemaker of the Year” awards in all years she has been eligible.
