100 Years Ago – the Munising News – December 14th, 1923 Santa Will Not Forget the Poor The Welfare Committee of The Woman’s Club has been in touch with Kris Kringle this holiday season, making sure that Santa Claus is not going to forget any Munising boy or girl this Christmas eve. The club canvassed the city and has found over 50 children who were not on Santa’s list. Through the efforts of the Club, this condition is to be transformed. Every last one of these children is to receive a stocking filled with toys and goodies this Christmas.
80 Years Ago – The Munising News – Dec. 17th, 1943 Co-Op Opens Larger Store The Trenary Co-Operative Stores will formally open to the public its new self-service variety store in Munising on Monday, December 20th. Added to the staple lines of groceries, meats and produce which have been carried in the past will be a new line of dry goods, household necessities, hardware novelties and paints. Special sales for the grand opening include print cloth for $0.29 per yard, 32-piece dinnerware for $4.98 and bars of soap, 2 / $0.23.
50 Years Ago – The Munising News – Dec. 19th, 1973 Housing Main Topics at City Comm. Meeting Matters of housing were the main item of business at the regular City Commission meeting Monday night. The plat for a new residential subdivision to be known as Sherwood Hills, submitted by Edward O’Boyle of Munising was accepted after considerable discussion on various aspects of the plans. The new subdivision will contain 27 single-family residential lots on the east end of the city.
25 Years Ago – The Munising News – December 16th, 1998 Trim-A-Tree Provides a Great Time for a Great Cause The Trim-A-Tree for Special Olympics hosted this year by the Alger County Kiwanis Club was another big hit this holiday season. The affair, which was held at the American Legion provided food, beverages and entertainment for all of those in attendance. The proceeds from this event will go to assist the Special Olympics.
10 Years Ago – The Munising News – December 18th, 2013 Olson Chosen as City Manager At the City of Munising Commission meeting on Monday, December 17th, City Commissioners selected the next Munising City Manager after a brief discussion. Devin Olson, from Spring Lake Michigan was unanimously selected by the City Commission, out of a pool of five candidates. The Commissioners were very agreeable to selecting Olson.
