Munising, MI – Nestled on the northern edge of the Hiawatha National Forest, Valley Spur offers 27 miles of cross country ski trails, providing an idyllic winter escape for enthusiasts. Maintained by the dedicated efforts of the Friends of Valley Spur, this beloved trail system on M-94, just 5 miles west of Munising, usually boasts daily grooming, creating a haven for skiers.
However, this winter season has posed some challenges. Unpredictable snow conditions have disrupted the routine grooming, affecting the trail system’s normal operation. Despite these setbacks, Valley Spur remains open for adventure.
As of the last weekend, the trails were open and in good shape, albeit with spring skiing conditions prevailing. Notably, Trails G, H, and Z are not currently being groomed but remain accessible to eager skiers.
One noticeable change is the temporary closure of the Lodge, effective from Monday, Feb 5th, due to poor snow conditions. Valley Spur suggests utilizing the trails in the upper parking lot for optimal spring skiing conditions. These trails, known for being flatter and more beginner-friendly, provide a “flat and fun” experience.
While the ski trails adapt to the weather’s whims, the snowshoe trails maintain their good condition. Valley Spur urges visitors to use snowshoes to prevent damage to the trails, emphasizing that walking with boots can break through the base, creating less-than-ideal conditions for others.
The reopening of the Lodge hinges entirely on Mother Nature’s cooperation. Without a fresh layer of snow, the trail conditions are expected to deteriorate further. All eyes are closely monitoring weather forecasts, hoping for a snowy reprieve.
A gentle dusting of snow on Saturday, Feb 10th, combined with below freezing temperatures, provided a welcomed sight to the Munising area. This fresh snow not only painted the landscape white but also beckoned skiers to Valley Spur. The parking lot saw a modest half dozen cars, eager to stretch their legs in this winter wonderland.
The Munising Beacon spoke with two groups of skiers, both from out of town, preparing to explore the trails. One group hailed from Wisconsin, while the other ventured from Oregon. They were all in town for Ice Fest, but received a glowing recommendation from a local restaurant to experience Valley Spur’s charm. Both groups were eager to make the most of their long weekend, relishing the opportunity to ski in this picturesque setting.
The Friends of Valley Spur is hosting a free family fun day on February 17th from 12PM to 3PM. Free food. Free snowshoe rentals. South Bay Outfitters will have demos and free rental skis. Volunteers onsite to help learn how to ski. Come see the grooming equipment they hope to purchase with donations.
For those planning their Valley Spur adventure or seeking updates on trail conditions, the Friends of Valley Spur maintains a facebook page and a website at www. valleyspur.org.
As the winter unfolds, Valley Spur stands resilient, welcoming all who seek the thrill of cross-country skiing amid the beauty of Hiawatha National Forest.
