Northern Reflections: A Journey Through the Upper Peninsula with Peter Wurdock

A Nostalgic Lens is the sixth book by Michigan author Peter Wurdock. This photo study in black and white compliments his poignant essays detailing the last three years in the Upper Peninsula, where he moved after leaving Metro Detroit. Readers are given a ringside seat to his new life in the slow lane with this beautifully constructed book which shows how life in the UP with his beloved Greyhounds has been anything but mundane.

“Moving to the Upper Peninsula was something I’ve thought about since I was a kid,” Wurdock recalls. “But it didn’t happen until I turned 55. It wasn’t until an unexpected chain of events unfolded that I made the move. The move to the UP has been a place for me to plum the thoughts and ideas that I have always wanted to explore north of the Mackinac Bridge.”

The photographs are diverse and compelling, leading readers to beautiful places the author knows well but are not found in a travel brochure. They also capture the simplicity of small-town life. Everything is effortlessly woven together through his keen observations of rural and small-town life, arriving at the universal conclusion about what makes life in the slow lane worth living.

A Nostalgic Lens contains over 100 photos across 83 pages. Independent promotion will commence throughout Michigan with radio, print media, Facebook and book signings.

“At this point, I forget whether Pete Wurdock is a photographer who writes or a writer who takes great photographs. But I know I love the way he combines words and images to bring to life wise birds, Pine Stump Junction and so much of what makes the Upper Peninsula our state’s North Star.” -Neal Rubin, Detroit Free Press “Peter Wurdock’s photos and words capture the ineffable in this lovely collection. That he knows and loves the UP—along with the human heart—is clear from page one. His book will have a special spot on my mantle.” Ellen Airgood, two-time Michigan Notable Book award winner, UP Notable Book Award winner, Midwest bestseller, recipient of Michigan’s Great Places, Great Reads award.
