Pokela honored by Lions foundation

Deane Pokela of Munising has been named a Melvin Jones Fellow by Lions Clubs International Foundation in recognition of his commitment to serving the world community.

Named for the founder of Lions Clubs International, Melvin Jones, the fellowship is one of the foundation’s highest recognitions, honoring the commitment to humanitarian service.

Pokela is a member of the Munising Lions Club. He recently received a commemorative plaque and lapel pin acknowledging his dedication to the foundation’s humanitarian goals.

As a Melvin Jones Fellow, Pokela becomes part of the growing network of individuals who are committed to improving the quality of life for people locally and in communities around the world. He has been actively involved in the Munising Lions Club and its events raising funds to support the community.

Pokela has headed the Christmas lighting contest for many years. He coordinates the New Year’s Eve party for teens, which has become popular with the youth of the area. He arranges the Eyes Wide Open golf outing the first Saturday in June. He has served as the president and vice president of the Munising Lions Club as well as the tail twister.

In the past, Pokela has run the Lions Duck Race at the Anna River for years and, as vice president, he headed the Lions Carnival.

Outside of the Munising Lions Club, Pokela was the chairman of the local credit union board for 20 out of 25 years of service on the board. He runs the yearly Vietnam Veterans’ raffle and volunteers at the Alger County Food Pantry.

“I am honored to receive the Melvin Jones Fellowship,” Pokela said. “I enjoy watching new members become actively involved in our club and grow as members of our community.”
