Winter parking ban in effect

The City of Munising’s winter parking ban started on Tuesday, Nov. 15 and will run through April 15 based on snow plowing needs.The ban prevents vehicles from being parked on any city street between 3 a.m.-6 a.m. so snow plows can come through. First offense is a $50 ticket, second is $75 ticket and third or more offenses is a $115 ticket and any costs related to snow removal. Ticketing does not typically happen when snow plows are not on the road.

Pancake breakfast in Trenary

The Trenary Lions Club will be hosting their annual pancake breakfast on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 9 a.m.-noon at the Trenary Community Building. Cost is $10. Money raised will be used for charitable events in the Trenary area.

ARCF starts annual fundraising campaign

The Alger Regional Community Foundation (ARCF) is holding its annual End of the Year Giving Campaign. The ARCF does not take an operational fee from the 43 endowment funds it manages, so donations will help with operational costs of the foundation. Donations can be made through mail to PO Box 39 in Munising or at www.algercf. com. This is the 30th year of the campaign.

First Presbyterian, Trenary Methodist hosts bazaars

Two local churches will host holiday bazaars on Saturday, Nov. 19. The First Presbyterian Church of Munising will host their annual “Street of Little Shops & Bazaar” from 10 a.m.1 p.m.. The event has a number of items for sale as well as baked goods and door prizes. The Trenary United Methodist Church will hold their Christmas bazaar from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. with lunch available.

TV6 Canathon underway

The annual push to restock local food pantries has begun. TheTV6 Canathon is hoping for 300,000 pounds of non-perishable food items this year. If that goal is successful, it means over five million pounds of food have been donated since the canathon began in 1982. Gallery Coffee Company is the donation location in Munising, but schools are also a donation spot.

Gwinn schools reopen after threat

The Gwinn Area Community Schools are reopened after a social media threat of a school shooting. Gwinn schools were closed on Tuesday, Nov. 15 after a student talked about having a “school shooting outfit”. Forsyth Township Police Department was able to determine the source of the threat and school resumed Wednesday. Gwinn is the third Upper Peninsula school to miss time due to a threat this school year. Escanaba and Manistique were both closed to investigate potential threats.

Hancock buys Houghton County Arena

The City of Hancock has purchased the Houghton County Arena for $1 from the Houghton County government. The arena has a big impact in the Houghton County Fair and hosts the MSU Extension offices in the county. It is also the home of the Finlandia University mens and womens NCAA Division 3 hockey teams.
