The Grand Marais Chamber of Commerce is hosting a Holiday Light Parade on Friday, Nov. 25 in downtown Grand Marais to kick off the Christmas season. The parade will start at 4:30 p.m. and lead to the Christmas Tree lighting at 5. Small business Saturday events will also happen from 3-7 p.m. at local businesses.

Nightly closures for Mackinac Bridge

The Mackinac Bridge will close to traffic between 2:30 and 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 29, and Wednesday, Nov. 30, for replacement of the bridge’s backup power system. The closures are necessary because the electrical work will also result in an outage of the bridge’s tolling system. The Mackinac Bridge Authority (MBA) selected these dates and times as they are the anticipated lowest traffic volumes for this time of year.

Cearley, Hall reappointed to DDA

Two long-time members of the Munising DDA are back on the board. Cori Cearley and Tom Hall were both approved to the authority’s board by Munising Mayor Mike Nettleton at the Munising City Commission meeting on Monday, Nov. 21. Both expressed interest in retaining their spots and received a vote of confidence from Nettleton, who serves as the city’s representative to the DDA.

Munising, SC pass audits

Both Munising Public Schools and Superior Central Schools passed their annual audits, according to presentations by Marquette-based accounting firm Anderson, Tackman and Company. Both school districts were considered at a loss when factoring in retirement and other post-employment benefits (OPEBs), but those are operated by the state. For the parts of the audit controlled at a local level, both school districts had a positive fund balance and have four times the savings required to prevent a state takeover.

U.P. man arrested for multiple murders

Caleb Anderson of Iron County has been arrested in Alabama for a murder in that state while he has been charged with another murder in Green Bay. According to the Associate Press, Anderson used dating apps to meet and kill men. He also was charged with assaulting numerous women near Northern Michigan University’s campus in 2019.

Low-speed police chase due to low blood sugar

The Marquette County Sheriff’s Office is warning drivers about paying attention to their health after a low blood sugar incident led to a low-speed police chase. After numerous calls of an erratic driver believed to be drunk in Ishpeming, the driver of the vehicle was eventually pulled over and discovered to have low blood sugar. The driver was treated for the medical issue and released.

Puppy adopted after thrown off bridge

A puppy thrown off a bridge last week in Sault Ste Marie has now been adopted by one of the officers that saved her. Surveillance video shows the puppy was lifted over a wall into the Cloverfield Power Canal, but the puppy was uninjured. An adult woman and a minor have been charged with animal cruelty over the incident while the puppy has a new owner happy to have her.
