Bingo jackpot breaks $1,400

The Munising Moose Lodge progressive bingo jackpot is now at $1,405. Players need to cover their card of 25 spaces in 62 numbers or less to win. Bingo is held every Monday at 5:00 p.m. at the Munising Moose Lodge.

Immel, Wilkinson reappointed

The Munising City Commission reappointed Dale Immel and Bob Wilkinson were reappointed to their respective positions on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Immel serves on the Downtown Development Authority and Wilkinson was renewed on the Board of Review.

Local MSP Captain on administrative leave

Captain Clint Michelin has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation, according to MSP Eighth District Public Information Officer Mark Giannunzio. There have been no information released regarding what is being investigated, but Michelin has been on leave since last week. Giannunzio said that administrative leaves are common to conduct an investigation. The MSP Eighth District covers the entire Upper Peninsula.

Bay Mills expands housing opportunities

The Bay Mills Indian Community (BMIC) Executive Council passed a resolution promising $6 million for housing projects in the Brimley area. It is the largest tribal housing project in the Upper Peninsula in over a decade and the first major tribal housing project announced in the U.P. since the pandemic.

Props 2, 3 are recounted

Two proposals passed in the November election — one for voting access procedures and one for abortion and other reproductive health issues — are going under a partial recount. The limited amount of ballots recounted cannot overturn the election. According to documents with the State Board of Canvassers, the recount is funded by a pro-Trump businessman from Utah in the hopes of finding data that would prove some kind of voter fraud.

Marquette man arraigned for bomb threat

Patrick Bassett of Marquette was arraigned for making a false bomb threat and malicious use of a telecommunications device after he phoned in a bomb threat to UPHP-Marquette last Friday. The man had previously served two years in prison for a similar fake bomb threat in New York state.

While threats against U.P. schools are on the rise this year, this is the first time a U.P. hospital has been targeted with a fake threat.

Whitmer in Soo for tribal summit

Governor Gretchen Whitmer attended the Tribal Summit in Sault Ste. Marie on Tuesday, where Michigan tribal leaders and state leaders could discuss ongoing issues impacting overlaps between tribal and state governments. Whitmer also appointed Judge Allie Greenleaf Maldonado to the Michigan Court of Appeals. Greenleaf is appointed to District 4 of the Court of Appeals, which includes the Upper Peninsula. She is the first tribal member to be appointed to such a position.
