Tree lighting at MMH
The annual Lights of Love tree lighting at Munising Memorial Hospital returns this year on Dec. 20. The event will bring extra cheer to the lobby and is the last advertised non-religious holiday event in the area. Ornaments from the tree will be for sale with proceeds donated to the Wetmore Community Club.
Skandia holiday parade Friday
Skandia/West Branch Emergency Services is hosting a small holiday parade and visit with Santa on Friday, Dec. 16 at 7 p.m.. The parade will go down Krieger Drive, ending at the Skandia Township Hall. Letters for Santa will be received by Skandia/West Branch firefighters and EMS during the parade.

Name new GM park
Burt Township is taking suggestions for a new name for a prominent Grand Marais feature. The land between the Maki House and Fast House near the old Coast Guard Point boat dock has been acquired by the township to build a small walk-in park. This property will allow access to the bay. Submissions can be made to the township offices by February 1.
Judge hears Sault Tribe fishing motion
U.S. District Court Judge Paul Maloney will hold a status conference regarding a motion from the Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians to regulate its own commercial fishing. The motion comes after the Sault Tribe did not join in with other Michigan tribes in signing a commercial fishing regulation with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The agreement clarifies tribal commercial fishing rights protected by an 1836 treaty, which will confirm a set of rules for 24 years. Bay Mills Indian Community signed the agreement.
NMU top social media school
Northern Michigan University was named the 2022 Best Social Media Marketing school by statistics and methodology website Rival IQ. NMU finished fifth on Facebook, ninth on both Twitter and Instagram and 12th on TikTok of the 305 qualifying universities and college nationwide and was the only school to finish in the top 10 in multiple categories. The profiles showcase both the college and numerous other locations in the Central U.P. through user-generated content, including Alger County.
