The Chatham Ski Hill will be opening later than expected due to a case of COVID with hill personnel. The illness was tracked to the Rock River Township meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 20, so those in attendance are asked to monitor for potential contraction of COVID. The new opening date is set for Saturday, Dec. 31.

SC, Baptist play scrimmage

The Munising Baptist Bobcats will head to Eben Junction today for a matchup with the Superior Central Cougars. This is the first time the schools have played each other, with the game counting as a scrimmage for the schools. Tip off is 11 a.m. in the Superior Central gymnasium.

ACD offering Christmas tree recycling

Alger County residents can recycle their Christmas trees this year. The program will be used to collect natural trees to help with habitat rehabilitation projects done during the Spring. Trees can be dropped off at the Munising Wastewater Treatment Plant at 560 E. Munising Ave in Munising.

McBroom sworn in for 38th Senate seat

Sen. Ed McBroom will begin his second term as senator for the 38th Michigan Senate District after he took the oath of office in Escanaba on Tuesday. He says he plans to continue his focus from last term. He was sworn in with David Preston, who will be serving his first term as the 108th House District Representative.

Johnson, Wells named to MTU Board

Matthew D. Johnson, of Marquette, and Monique Q. Wells of Chelsea, were appointed to the Michigan Tech University Board of Trustees. Johnson is a manager of External Relations at Eagle Mine in Champion and was reappointed for a term commencing January 1, 2023 and expiring December 31, 2030. Wells is the director of diversity, equity, and inclusion at DTE Energy. She is appointed for a term commencing January 1, 2023 and expiring December 31, 2030. She succeeds Brenda Ryan.

One dead in Luce snowmobile-vehicle collision

The Luce County Sheriff’s Office says a 55-year-old woman from Chesterfield was trying to cross M-123 from Charcoal Grade to go south into Newberry around 6:30 p.m. The snowmobile pulled into the lane of a northbound vehicle that could not stop before hitting the snowmobile. The operator of the snowmobile was thrown off the machine into the southbound lane of travel. The operator was then hit by a southbound vehicle that did not see the victim lying in the road. The woman was taken to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital by Luce County EMS where she was pronounced dead from her injuries.
