First Yooper baby of 2023 born
Luzianna Guadalupe was born to her parents Gina and Luis at UPHPMarquette on Jan. 1 at 1:10 a.m., making her the first baby born in the Upper Peninsula in 2023. She weighed seven pounds, 3.8 ounces and 19 inches long and healthy.
Lions Packers flexed to Sunday night
The Detroit Lions will play the Green Bay Packers with a playoff spot on the line on Sunday night after being flexed to primetime by the NFL. If the Packers win, they will be the seventh seed in the NFC. If the Lions win, they also need the Seattle Seahawks to lose to make the playoffs.
Tahquamenon Sled Dog race canceled
The Tahquamenon Country Sled Dog Race has been canceled for the 2023 season due to lack of snow. Race organizers posted on its Facebook page that the three inches of snow was not enough to make the trail safe for all. It is the first major cancelation of a sled dog race in the U.P. this season.
Gerou, Hale appointed to city boards
Angela Gerou was appointed to the Munising Housing Commission at the Munising City Commission meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 4. She joins the board after a vacancy was created by a retiring commission member. Rita Hale will return to the Board of Review. Hale has served multiple terms on the voluntary board. Both were unanimously approved.
Bay College looking for new president
The Upper Peninsula’s biggest community college is accepting applications for president. This comes as current president Laura Coleman announced her retirement. Bay is the third college looking for new leadership in the U.P. in the last 13 months, as Finlandia and Northern Michigan University also have new presidents.
Benson awarded Presidential Citizen Medal
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson will receive the Presidential Citizens Medal from President Joe Biden in a White House ceremony today for her work protecting democracy. The medal is the nation’s second- highest civilian award and will be presented on the second anniversary of the Jan. 6, 2021 occupation of the U.S. Capitol. Eleven total awards will be given to election workers, those in charge of elections in states falsely accused of election fraud and police officers defending the Capitol Building during the occupation.
