Benzing fundraiser Wednesday

A fundraiser has been set for Wednesday, Feb. 1 at the Munising Moose Lodge. A silent auction and raffle will go along with a meal and bake sale. The event runs from 4:30-7:30 p.m. and will benefit Peter Benzing while dealing with medical costs during recovery from a head trauma incident.

Nifty Thrifty meets furnace goal The Nifty Thrifty, a resale shop that donates proceeds to local food pantry projects in Eben, has reached its fundraising goal to install a new furnace and pay for its installation. The new furnace guarantees that the store will be able to stay warm for winter operations.

Local Catholic services change Sacred Heart of Jesus Munising is shifting services for three of the four Catholic churches in Alger County due to lack of substitute priests in the area. Mass will be held on Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart in Munising, and now 12:30 p.m. at Holy Rosary in Grand Marais. St. Therese Mission in Au Train will reopen for Easter and will hold its mass at 6 p.m. on Saturdays.

U.P. Arts & Culture Alliance looking for members The Upper Peninsula Arts & Culture Alliance is looking for additional membership and council candidates from Alger County. The group administers grants, promotes economic and cultural opportunities though the arts. Alger County is considered an underserved art community of the 15 counties in the region.

Stabenow nominates Yooper for Naval Academy U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow has nominated Mackenzie Primeau from Iron Mountain for admission at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Students seeking appointment to a service academy must first obtain the nomination of their U.S. Senator, their U.S. Representative or the Vice President.

Packers donate AEDs in U.P.

The Green Bay Packers are funding 80 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) across Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula in honor of medical staff’s response to Buffalo Bills DB Damar Hamlin. The devices will be placed at schools and recreation centers in need and will include staff training for the devices.
