MAHA Districts in Munising

The Michigan Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) will start its 12U District Tournament at Alger Centennial Ice Arena today and run through Sunday. The tournament hosts eight teams in a round-robin format. Munising plays Friday at 2 p.m. vs DAHA, Copper Country on Saturday at 8 a.m. and Tahquamenon Area on Saturday at 3 p.m.. Semifinals and finals will be played Sunday for qualifying teams.

Winter Homecomings this week

The Mustangs will wrap up a week of winter homecoming activities with the boys basketball game tonight at the middle/high school gymnasium. Munising (141) will host the Gladstone Braves (5-7) with JV tipoff at 6 p.m. and varsity following. Superior Central will also have their winter homecoming games in a boys and girls doubleheader on Friday against Big Bay de Noc. Grand Marais will have their homecoming contest on Tuesday, Feb. 7 against Paradise.

Chatham Chili Cookoff Saturday

A chili cook-off will be held Saturday, Feb. 4 at 5 p.m. at the Rock River Township Hall in Chatham to benefit the Chatham Ski Hill. The competition will feature numerous local chilis with prizes given to the top 3 entries after a popular vote. Submitting a chili is free, but to eat and vote, admission is $10 or $5 for seniors, students and veterans.

Ice Fest next week The international event Michigan Ice Fest will start next Wednesday and run through Sunday, Feb. 12 in Munising. The event which brings in some of the biggest personalities, manufacturers and exhibitions in ice climbing will be around the Greater Munising area and will be using numerous downtown locations during the event. Kleiman named school resource officer

Officer Jake Kleiman of the Munising Police Department was officially named as the Munising Public Schools school resource officer. The joint effort between the MPD and the school district will place Kleiman in Mather Elementary and the middle/ high school to help with various needs.

Thompson, Escanaba vets expand emergency response

Thompson Veterinary Clinic and Escanaba Veterinary Clinic will be expanding its weekend emergency call rotation for animals in need of emergency response. The pair of clinics will now rotate emergency response during the week, due to lack of veterinarians in the area. Thompson left Munising in 2018 so the primary location in Manistique could stay fully staffed and many Alger residents seeking veterinarian care still use the office.
