A side-by-side off-roading vehicle went through the ice of the Escanaba River on Saturday, Feb. 18. One of the two people who went through the ice died.
The Delta County Sheriff’s Department says the vehicle fell through at approximately 7:00 in the morning.
There were two people on the side-by-side who went through the ice, and some nearby fishermen rescued one of them before deputies arrived.
Those two deputies who responded are also members of the search and rescue team, and they recovered the body of the other man from the water.
Deputies issued a warning on Saturday that there are many areas of unstable ice due to recent warm weather, and people should stay off the ice until we get some cold weather.
